| The Christmas Markets |
Dresden
In spite of vast destruction during the Second World War, the Old City part of Dresden has preserved and regained fascinating ensembles. The most famous symbol of reconstruction in the city centre is the Dresden Frauenkirche Church, the magnificent baroque dome, which dominates the city centre.
Dresden Christmas market, the ‚Striezelmarkt’, founded in 1434, has become to one of the most popular Christmas markets in Germany. It preserved its long tradition, changing event spots, not so the face of its historic background and surrounding, though.
Bamberg
is a city with an original character and a very special atmosphere. 1000 years of history are united in an Old Town that is a cultural and architectural site of European rank and therefore has been added to the UNESCO world heritage list.
Bamberg’s Christmas market, located in the heart of the Old Town, is very special about the unique event of the ‘Krippenweg’ (passage of cribs) from Nov. 26th 2005 to Jan. 6th 2006. The history and long tradition of manufacturing Christmas cribs is shown by very rare historic exhibits along 34 spots like churches, museums and public places. This time there are unique historic exhibits, never presented before to the public.
Nuremberg
No other German metropolis offers you so many traces of medieval and modern (from the 16th century!) art and culture. A great variety of quaint, traditional houses, proud churches, a castle where Emperors and lords were common visitors in the middle ages and a city wall that extends more than five kilometres around the Old Town. Here you can stroll through the Nuremberg ‘Christkindl’ (Christmas) market casting your eyes over the wonderfully decorated stalls or acquaint yourself with the varied choices on the Christkindl market.
Munich
Munich is a cosmopolitan city, the Bavarian capital and a place full of history. A multi-faceted city where you'll always find something exciting and of interest of your choice.
Munich's traditional Christmas Market on the famous ‘Marienplatz’ with a huge Christmas tree, decorated with lights, rises above the magical pre-Christmas atmosphere of the stalls and stands. At 5.30 pm every day Advent music is played on the balcony of the Town Hall.
Salzburg
Salzburg is proud of its past and its greatest son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born here in 1756. The city is located on the site of a Roman village and as an ecclesiastical principality Salzburg was ruled by archbishops, uniting both secular and ecclesiastical power. The sensitively renovated Old Town of Salzburg is placed on UNESCO's list of the world's cultural heritage sites. Alongside the great history, contemporary Salzburg is also a modern city. Salzburg is proud to offer theatre, concerts and art on a par with the major cities of the world.
The "Christkindlmarkt" (Christmas market) of today in Cathedral Square dates back to the traditional St. Nikolas Market of the 15 century. The unique atmosphere of the square with its booths traditionally arranged and illuminated, provide the market with an international attraction. The daily performances by local choirs, pastoral and Nativity plays by pupils from Salzburg’s schools, the performances of the wind player on the tower and the readings of Christmas stories in front of the portal of the cathedral constitute a cultural as well as artistic enrichment for the Christkindlmarkt.
Option: Prague
Prague Castle, founded around 870, is the largest medieval castle complex in Europe, around that at about 1230 Old Town started to grow. The Old Town Square in Prague is a journey back in time and is unquestionably one of the most beautiful historical sights in Europe. The most notable sights are the Church of Our Lady before Tyn, the Astronomical Clock & Old Town Hall, Tower and the beautiful St. Nicolas Church.
Prague Christmas markets in the Old Town Square are a great opportunity for visitors and locals to come together and share some holiday spirit in a true 'winter wonderland' setting.
